Duke University Medical Center offers excellent training in neurosurgery with two to three positions per year. The residency at Duke is a six year program (one year of surgery internship plus five years of neurosurgery) which includes one year of basic science research.

The Duke Neurosurgery program has a long and successful tradition in the training of neurosurgeons throughout the history of American neurosurgery, including those just starting to investigate the process during medical school. Visiting medical students are always welcome and encouraged to rotate through the Duke University Neurosurgery program as a subintern.

Since neurosurgery represents a lifelong endeavor of continual learning and self-improvement, the Duke training program started this award in 2005 to recognize the resident who has demonstrated the most consistent and successful attempt to maintaining a high level of academic advancement throughout the entire year. This is demonstrated through success on in-house assessments of conference topics, national board scores, and publication achievement. Winners are recognized with a plaque & prize at the annual chief's dinner.
