Chief's Message

Allan Friedman, MDThe Faculty and Staff of the Division of Neurosurgery at Duke University Medical Center welcome you to our web site.

Our Mission

Patient Care – The Neurosurgical Service at Duke University is committed to the quest for the best possible treatment of diseases that affect the nervous system. Working as a team with other medical specialists, the neurosurgeon can advise the patient as to the appropriate options for treatment and diagnosis. As a division within a nationally recognized medical center, we are committed to shepherding the most promising treatments from the laboratory to the clinic for previously incurable conditions. Each faculty member, while fully trained in all aspects of neurosurgery, has identified areas of particular expertise.

Neurosurgery Residency Training - The Neurosurgical Faculty at Duke University are committed to the education of the next generation of neurosurgeons. In an environment that provides exemplary patient care, resident education stresses stepwise clinical decision making, technical neurosurgery, continuing education, and interpersonal and communication skills. Residents participate and initiate both clinical and laboratory based research.

The Duke Neurosurgery program has a long and successful tradition in the training of neurosurgeons throughout the history of American neurosurgery, including those just starting to investigate the process during medical school.  Visiting medical students are always welcome and encouraged to rotate through the Duke University Neurosurgery program as a subintern.  For more information visit the Visiting Medical Student  section.

Research – The Division of Neurosurgery engages in basic, translational and clinical research aimed at conquering diseases of the nervous system.

Sincerely,

Allan H. Friedman, M.D.
